A case of acute diarrhea due to the emerging pathogen Campylobacter jejuni subsp. doylei in Southern Chile BJM
Fernández,Heriberto; Rodríguez,Roxana; Barudi,Carmen; Lobos,Marta.
The first documented case of acute diarrhea due to C. jejuni subsp. doylei in Chile is reported. The clinical findings, the absence of other enteropathogens, virus or parasites and the fact that C. jejuni subsp. doylei was the only bacteria isolated support the assumption that it was the etiological agent of this diarrheal case.

Adhesive properties of an outer structure of Clostridium perfringens type A isolated from piglets with with catarrhal enteritis Rev. Microbiol.
Teixeira,Elizabeth Pelosi; Serafim,Marlene Braide; Höfling,Maria Alice Cruz; Yamada,Aureo T.; Castro,Antonio Fernando Pestana de.
One strain (S32) of Clostridium perfringens type A was isolated from a case of catarrhal enteritis of piglets. This strain was able to adhere to HeLa cells showing an adherence index (AI) of 25.15 ± 1.26 (mean ± 1 standard error of the mean). Treatment of the bacterial cells with trypsin (0.25mg/ml) decreased in 70%-80% the AI and metaperiodate (10mg/ml) abolished completely the adherence, suggesting that the structure responsible for this phenomenon was probably a glycoprotein. Heating of bacterial suspensions (100ºC/5 min) before carrying out the adhesion test decreased the AI rendering it equal to the negative controls. Rabbit homologous S32 antiserum inhibited the adherence up to dilutions of 1: 640, at least. The piglet ileal loop assay, carried out...

Clinical and epidemiological aspects of canine parvovirus (CPV) enteritis in the State of Rio de Janeiro: 1995 - 2004 Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Castro,T.X.; Miranda,S.C.; Labarthe,N.V.; Silva,L.E.; Cubel Garcia,R.C.N..
This paper relates the clinical and epidemiological aspects of canine parvovirus infection (CPV) in the State of Rio de Janeiro from April 1995 to March 2004. A total of 341 fecal samples were collected from up to 6-months-old puppies with gastroenteritis. The diagnosis of CPV infection was confirmed by hemagglutination/ hemagglutination inhibition tests, enzyme immunoassay, virus isolation in cell culture or polymerase chain reaction. One hundred and fifty-seven samples (46%) were positive for CPV. No correlation among sex, breed or age and the occurrence of CPV infection was observed. The classical signs of parvoviral enteritis (anorexia, lethargy, vomiting and hemorrhagic fluid diarrhea) were observed in 70% of CPV-positive and in 60% of CPV-negative...

Clostridium difficile infection: main features and occurrence in domestic species in Brazil Ciência Rural
Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Guedes,Roberto Maurício de Carvalho; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
Clostridium difficile is an emerging enteropathogen of humans and domestic animals. The bacterium was recently confirmed to be present in foals and dogs in Brazil, with some recent studies suggesting that C. difficile is one of the most important causes of piglet diarrhea in the country. Moreover, some reports also suggest the transmission of this microorganism between animals and humans, raising the possibility that C. difficile is a zoonotic disease. Therefore, the aim of the present review is to describe the main features of C. difficile infection in domestic animals and outline the occurrence of the disease in horses, dogs and pigs in Brazil.

Clostridium perfringens: a review of the disease in pigs, horses and broiler chickens Ciência Rural
Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Oliveira Junior,Carlos Augusto; Guedes,Roberto Maurício Carvalho; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
Clostridium perfringens is a gram-positive, anaerobic, fermentative, spore-forming bacillus that may be found in the environment but is more commonly found as part of the microbiota of humans and animals. The bacterium is considered a common enteric pathogen; however, the pathogenesis and predisposing factors of the disease can differ among species. Therefore, specific studies are necessary for understanding the role of this pathogen, how to diagnose it and which control measures are applicable. The aim of this paper is to review the current knowledge regarding C. perfringens infections in pigs, horses and broiler chickens

Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Salvarani,Felipe Masiero; Cruz Júnior,Eduardo Coulaud da Costa; Pires,Prhiscylla Sadanã; Santos,Renata Lara Resende; Assis,Ronnie Antunes de; Guedes,Roberto Maurício de Carvalho; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
Clostridium difficile has emerged as a major cause of neonatal colitis in piglets, displacing classic bacterial pathogens. However, there is no information regarding the distribution of this microorganism in pig farms in Brazil. In the present study, the presence of toxins A/B and of C. difficile strains in stool samples from 60 diarrheic or non-diarrheic newborn piglets (one to seven days old), from 15 different farms, was studied. The presence of toxins A/B was detected by ELISA and PCR was used to identify toxin A, toxin B and binary toxin gene in each isolated strain. C. difficile A/B toxins were detected in ten samples (16.7%). Of these, seven were from diarrheic and three were from non-diarrheic piglets. C. difficile was recovered from 12 out of 60...

Detection of serum amyloid-A concentration in the calf clinically diagnosed with pneumonia, enteritis and pneumoenteritis Ciência Rural
Kabu,Mustafa; Elitok,Bulent; Kucukkurt,Ismail.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to determine serum amyloid-A (SAA) concentration in the cases of pneumonia, pneumoenteritis, and enteritis which are frequently encountered in calves in veterinary medicine. Although a great deal of experimental studies has been conducted in this field, studies on naturally infected calves are quite few. Eighty calves at the age of 0-6 months were used in the study and the calves were divided into four groups. Due to the clinical examination, the calves diagnosed with pneumonia (Group P; n=20), with pneumoenteritis (Group PE; n=20) and with enteritis (Group E; n=20) formed the disease group as the healthy ones formed the control (Group C; n=20) group. After the body temperatures of all calves were taken, blood samples...

Enteric viruses in turkey flocks: a historic review Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Alavarez,JM; Ferreira,CSA; Ferreira,AJP.
In this review, diagnostic techniques and viral agents involved in enteric diseases affecting turkeys are described. Data from field observations and laboratory researches have been reported in turkey flocks for over 70 years, and several viruses have been identified. After a period of 30 years of inoculation experiments and neutralization studies, adequate visualization of the viruses was achieved using electronic microscopy. During the following years, several studies were then conducted to isolate and classify those viruses using cell-culture, embryo-propagation, serological tests, genome electropherotyping by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of double-stranded RNA viruses, and recently, nucleic acid studies. Thus, since the 1990s, the nucleic-acid...

Entero-hepatic pathobiology: histopathology and semi-quantitative bacteriology of the duodenum Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Ito,NMK; Miyaji,CI; Lima,EA; Okabayashi,S; Claure,RA; Graça,EO.
Duodenum swabs were harvested from 80 broilers in 15 flocks of 8 broiler farms and were submitted to bacteriological evaluation. Five broiler breeders were sampled to obtain comparative data. Macro and microscopic lesions in the gut and the liver were evaluated in all birds submitted to swab harvesting and also broilers of two slaughter plants. Semiquantitative bacterial examination in duodenum swabs demonstrated higher microorganism growth in blood agar than in MacConkey medium. Staphylococcus sp, Enterococcus sp and Escherichia coli were found in some broiler flocks. An increased cellularity of the muscular mucosae of duodenum villi and/or the presence of some gametocytes or schizonts of coccidia were found in the lesioned gut in addition to high...

Identification of bacterial agents of enteric diseases by multiplex PCR in growing-finishing pigs BJM
Baccaro,Maria Regina; Moreno,Andrea Micke; Shinya,Luciane Tieko; Dotto,Daniela Sabatini.
In Brazil, the most common bacterial enteric diseases affecting growing and finishing pigs are porcine proliferative enteritis, porcine intestinal spirochetosis, swine dysentery, and salmonellosis. The diagnosis of these diseases by routine culture techniques is expensive, difficult, time-consuming, and even impossible, in cases of porcine proliferative enteritis. The detection of pathogens by polymerase chain reaction is a highly sensitive and specific method that can be an useful tool in veterinary diagnosis. Two multiplex PCR (M-PCR) assays were tested for simultaneous detection and identification of bacterial agents associated with porcine proliferative enteritis, porcine intestinal spirochetosis, swine dysentery, and salmonellosis in diarrheic fecal...

Partial substitution of fishmeal with soybean protein-based diets for dourado Salminus brasiliensis Scientia Agricola
Correa,Roselany de Oliveira; Aguilar,Fredy Armando Aguilar; Cruz,Thaline Maira Pachelli da; Sabioni,Rafael Estevan; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
ABSTRACT Cost and environmental restrictions limit the use of fishmeal (FM) in aquafeeds and plant protein (PP) sources. Soybean by-products are important alternative; however, their antinutritional factors may reduce fish growth. This study evaluates the effect of FM substitution for PP (soybean meal and soy protein concentrate) in diets of dourado (Salminus brasiliensis), a promising species for fish farming and empirically considered highly tolerant to PP-based diets. A control diet was formulated to contain 20 % of fishmeal and 61 % of plant protein (SBM) and other five diets with decreasing FM graded levels (16 %, 12 %, 8 %, 4 %, 0 %), which were replaced by soybean protein concentrate (SPC), comprising six treatments and four replicates. Fifteen...

Partial VP2 sequencing of canine parvovirus (CPV) strains circulating in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: detection of the new variant CPV-2c BJM
Castro,T.X.; Costa,E.M; Leite,J.P.G.; Labarthe,N.V.; Cubel Garcia,R.C.N..
Canine parvovirus (CPV) is the most important enteric virus for dogs and it seems to be undergoing continuous evolution, generating new genetic and antigenic variants throughout the world. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of CPV variants from 1995 to 2009 and to investigate the circulation of the new variant CPV-2c in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In addition, the clinical features of CPV infection were also reported. After CPV laboratorial confirmation by HA/HI and PCR, thirty-two fecal samples were analyzed by sequencing a 583-bp fragment of the VP2 gene. One sample, collected in 2008 was typed as the new type CPV-2c. All samples from 1995 to 2003 were identified as "new CPV-2a". From 2004 to 2006, both "new CPV-2a" and CPV-2b were...

Pathogenesis of Salmonella-induced enteritis BJMBR
Santos,R.L.; Tsolis,R.M.; Bäumler,A.J.; Adams,L.G..
Infections with Salmonella serotypes are a major cause of food-borne diseases worldwide. Animal models other than the mouse have been employed for the study of nontyphoidal Salmonella infections because the murine model is not suitable for the study of Salmonella-induced diarrhea. The microbe has developed mechanisms to exploit the host cell machinery to its own purpose. Bacterial proteins delivered directly into the host cell cytosol cause cytoskeletal changes and interfere with host cell signaling pathways, which ultimately enhance disease manifestation. Recently, marked advances have been made in our understanding of the molecular interactions between Salmonella serotypes and their hosts. Here, we discuss the molecular basis of the pathogenesis of...
